Denver and Rio Grande Western EMD PH3c1 SD40T-2.

Built in October 1974 under order number 74636 at the La Grange plant, this order of 15 units was the first of the iconic SD40T-2 model locomotives. As delivered, Ph1a3 T-2s featured diagonal lifting slots at the top corners of the pilots, MU cables on the deck above the pilot, and a Mars warning light mounted in the nose (later replaced with Pyle lights).

They had an 81-inch nose with a ratchet handbrake, early cab sub-base doors, bolted cab side window plates, and were delivered without cab vents (which were added later). Other features included a Nathan M3 horn, early stand-off style electrical cabinet air filter box, bolted radiator access doors with hinges at the bottom, square pilots, early EMD-style cut levers, and early style battery boxes with short slots. These were delivered without numbers on the rear flank. All but one unit (5348) saw service until UP's acquisition of the D&RGW in 1996.
